Yes, your child can lower ACL tear risk this season, but it takes a specific kind of warm-up, done regularly. The best evidence supports short, structured neuromuscular programs: 10 to 20 minutes of jumping, landing, balance, core, and strength work built into every team warm-up several days per week. These programs have reduced lower‑extremity injuries by about one‑third to one‑half in youth and adolescent players when teams actually stick with them.
The good news is there are warm-up programs that really do lower risk. The hard part is getting a team to use them consistently.
The short answer: what to do before practice
If your athlete does one thing this fall to lower ACL risk, it should be this: a 10 to 20 minute neuromuscular warm-up before every practice and game, led by the coach or athletic trainer.
That warm-up should include:
- Dynamic running and movement prep
- Squats and lunges focused on good knee alignment
- Jumping and landing drills with soft, bent-knee landings
- Single-leg balance and core control work
- Change-of-direction and deceleration drills
Structured programs built around these pieces have lowered leg injury rates by roughly one-third to one-half in youth and adolescent players when performed regularly.
You cannot drive the risk to zero. But you can make it meaningfully smaller.

A National Athletic Trainers' Association position statement reports that multicomponent preventive training performed about 15 to 20 minutes per session, 2 to 3 times per week, can substantially reduce ACL injuries, with reductions up to 75% reported in females in high-risk sports in some studies.

Several warm-up programs use this same neuromuscular approach. Your team does not need any specific named program, but following a short, structured routine with consistent movement habits matters.
- Program: SHRed Injuries Basketball. Who it studied: High school and club boys and girls who played basketball, ages 11 to 18 years. What it did: A 10-minute coach-led warm-up with 13 simple exercises that build aerobic fitness, agility, strength, and balance. Main effect: About a 36% lower rate of all knee and ankle injuries with this warm-up compared with the team's prior season warm-up (incidence rate ratio 0.64).
- Program: FIFA 11+ (and 11+ Kids). Who it studied: Male and female football (soccer) players in 12 different studies, with the injury reduction clearly shown in boys and men and the evidence in female players still limited. What it did: A set warm-up that replaced the team's usual warm-up at least twice a week, used during practices and before games. Main effect: A systematic review and meta-analysis found a significantly lower rate of lower limb injuries in male youth and adult players. A practical 10 to 20 minute warm-up might be structured like this:
- Dynamic movement (3 to 5 minutes)
Jogging, side-shuffles, backpedaling, high-knees, butt-kicks.
- Strength and alignment (4 to 6 minutes)
- Bodyweight squats and lunges, focusing on knees tracking over toes
- Hip abductor work like side-steps or monster walks (with or without bands)
- Jump and land training (4 to 6 minutes)
- Two-leg and single-leg jumps with emphasis on landing softly with bent hips and knees and knees not caving inward
- Forward and lateral hops with stick-and-hold landings
- Balance and core (3 to 5 minutes)
- Single-leg stands with eyes forward, adding upper-body movement or ball work
- Planks or similar core control exercises
- Change of direction and deceleration (3 to 5 minutes)
- Shuttle runs, 45- and 90-degree cuts, and planned stop-and-go drills focusing on low body position and control
Studies of neuromuscular programs after ACL reconstruction show that this combination of strengthening, plyometrics, balance, and movement retraining can improve trunk, hip, and knee flexion angles and reduce knee valgus and abduction moments during landing tasks. That is exactly the movement pattern change we want for primary prevention as well.

How to build buy-in from coaches and athletes
A program only works if teams actually do it. Research on ACL prevention emphasizes that implementation and adherence are now the limiting steps.
Strategies that help in schools and clubs:
- Make it the standard warm-up, not an optional add-on. When the neuromuscular program simply is how practice starts, compliance improves.
- Use coach education. In the SHRed Injuries Basketball study, coaches attended a workshop and then delivered the 10-minute program. Both supervised and unsupervised teams saw similar protective effects, suggesting that coach-led delivery can work in real-world settings.
- Set a specific goal. For example, committing as a team to complete the warm-up at least twice per week across the season mirrors the frequency used in trials of the FIFA 11+ and 11+ Kids programs.
- Show the numbers. Youth basketball teams using a 10-minute neuromuscular warm-up had about one-third fewer knee and ankle injuries. Boys' soccer teams using the 11+ Kids warm-up had 57% fewer overall injuries. Those are concrete results that resonate with coaches.

The exact risk change for your child is impossible to promise. But we can use ranges from the literature, so families know why this is worth the effort.

These studies remind us that not every additional element adds measurable benefit, and that some outcomes, such as exact joint position sense or second-injury rates in small groups, are harder to shift.
For primary prevention in healthy high school athletes, the most consistent support is for simple, structured neuromuscular warm-ups done regularly rather than for any one advanced technique.
What you can do this week
As a parent, you do not have to design the science from scratch. You can:
- Ask your child's coach or athletic trainer if the team is using a structured neuromuscular warm-up for ACL prevention
- Share that short, scripted programs (similar to FIFA 11+ or SHRed Injuries Basketball) have cut lower-extremity injury rates by about one-third to one-half when done consistently
- Encourage your athlete to take the warm-up seriously, especially the landing and cutting drills
