Maryland Orthopedic Specialists: Who We Are and How We Can Help

By Christopher S. Raffo, MD

A Practice Built Around You

Maryland Orthopedic Specialists (MOS) is an orthopedic surgery and sports medicine practice serving patients throughout the Washington DC and Maryland region, with offices in Bethesda, Rockville, and Germantown. We are a division of The Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics, one of the largest orthopedic groups in the country. What sets our practice apart is the combination of subspecialty expertise, on-site physical therapy, and a team that takes the time to understand your goals before recommending treatment.

Our physicians are fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons and sports medicine specialists. That means each doctor has completed advanced training in a specific area of the musculoskeletal system after residency — giving you the benefit of focused, current expertise rather than a generalist approach.

Conditions We Treat

We care for a wide range of orthopedic and sports medicine conditions across every part of the body:

Hand and wrist: Carpal tunnel syndrome, Dupuytren's contracture, trigger finger, wrist fractures, and hand arthritis are treated by our hand and upper extremity specialist, Dr. Peter Fitzgibbons.

Knee and hip: ACL tears, meniscus injuries, hip labrum tears, and advanced arthritis are managed by Dr. Christopher Raffo, Dr. James Gardiner, and Dr. John Christoforetti, who specializes in arthroscopic surgery of the knee, hip, and shoulder.

Foot and ankle: Plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendon disorders, ankle instability, bunions, and heel pain in younger athletes are treated by Dr. Gary Feldman, a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon.

Shoulder: Rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability, and shoulder arthritis requiring replacement are part of our surgical repertoire as well.

We also treat spine-related pain including herniated discs and degenerative conditions, and our on-site physical therapy team works directly with your surgeon throughout the recovery process.

Why Patients Choose MOS

Patients choose Maryland Orthopedic Specialists because we offer the depth of a large academic program with the responsiveness of a community practice. Our physicians are active in research and publish in peer-reviewed journals — Dr. Christoforetti alone has authored more than 50 original publications. At the same time, we make a point of knowing our patients by name and returning calls promptly.

We offer in-office X-ray, MRI coordination, and physical therapy at our locations, so your care stays coordinated and convenient. Most importantly, surgery is never the first recommendation. We work through conservative options — physical therapy, bracing, injections — before discussing operative treatment, and when surgery is the right answer, we use minimally invasive techniques whenever possible to support faster recovery.

This blog will be updated regularly with patient education articles covering the conditions we treat, what to expect from common procedures, and practical guidance on staying active and healthy. If you have a question about a topic you'd like us to address, we welcome your input.

If you're experiencing joint pain, a sports injury, or a musculoskeletal problem that's limiting your activity, the specialists at Maryland Orthopedic Specialists can help. Call (301) 515-0900 or [schedule an appointment online](https://www.mdorthospecialists.com/contact).
